How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?

Short answer: 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. That is the constant behind every hourly-to-salary conversion. Part-time and unpaid-leave schedules change it, and paid time off does not.

Where 2,080 comes from

A year holds 52 whole weeks. At the standard American full-time schedule of 40 hours, 40 × 52 = 2,080 paid hours. Nothing more sophisticated than that is going on, which is why the number shows up in job offers, budget spreadsheets and payroll systems alike.

It gives the fastest mental conversion in personal finance: double the hourly rate and read the answer as thousands of dollars. $25 an hour is roughly $50k a year. The shortcut is slightly low because doubling implies 2,000 hours rather than 2,080, so the true figure is $52,000 — about 4% above the quick answer.

Paid hours are not worked hours

This is the distinction that trips people up. For a salaried employee with two weeks of paid vacation, the paid year is still 2,080 hours; only 1,920 of them are spent working. Paid time off moves hours between the two columns without changing the salary, so it never changes the conversion.

What does change it is unpaid time: an unpaid leave, a seasonal shutdown, a contract that only runs 46 weeks. Those weeks come straight off the total, and the honest hourly figure drops with them. That is why the calculator asks for paid weeks rather than assuming 52.

Why the government says 2,087

A calendar year is not exactly 52 weeks. It is 365.25 days on average once leap years are spread out, which works out to about 52.18 weeks, or roughly 2,087 hours at 40 a week. The US Office of Personnel Management uses 2,087 for converting federal annual salaries to hourly rates so that the conversion stays fair across leap years.

The gap is seven hours — about a third of one percent. It matters for a payroll system processing millions of conversions and it does not matter for deciding whether to take a job.

Working days, and the 27-paycheck year

A 40-hour week is normally five 8-hour days, so a year contains about 260 working days (52 × 5). Subtract the paid holidays your employer observes — commonly six to eleven — and the days actually spent at work land between 249 and 254 before any vacation.

One more calendar quirk worth knowing: because 52 weeks is 364 days, the extra day each year slowly shifts the payroll calendar. Every eleven years or so a biweekly employer runs 27 pay periods in one calendar year instead of 26. Annual pay does not change, so each check in that year is slightly smaller, or the employer adds a catch-up check depending on how their policy is written.

Using your real number

  1. Salaried with paid leave: use 40 and 52. The 2,080 figure is correct for you.
  2. Hourly with steady hours: use your scheduled hours and 52 weeks, then check a pay stub — hourly schedules drift more than people expect.
  3. Seasonal or contract work: count the weeks you are actually paid. This is where the default assumption does the most damage to a budget.
  4. Regular overtime: leave it out of this conversion and price it separately, because those hours pay at a different rate.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a month?

About 173.33 on a full-time schedule: 2,080 hours divided by 12. Individual months range from about 160 to 184 hours depending on how the weekdays fall, which is why monthly figures are averaged rather than counted.

How many working days are in a year?

About 260 before holidays: 52 weeks times five days. Most US employers observe six to eleven paid holidays, leaving roughly 249 to 254 working days.

Does paid vacation reduce the 2,080 hours?

No. Paid time off is still paid, so the paid-hours total is unchanged. Only unpaid weeks reduce it, which is why the calculator asks for paid weeks per year.

Why do some sources say 2,087 hours?

Because a calendar year averages 52.18 weeks once leap years are counted. The US Office of Personnel Management uses 2,087 for federal salary conversions. The difference from 2,080 is about a third of one percent.
