How Thick Should a Concrete Slab Be?

Short answer: 4 inches for patios, walkways and shed pads; 5 to 6 inches for driveways and anything carrying vehicles; 6 inches or more where trucks or heavy equipment park. Local code and soil conditions override all of these.

What the extra inch costs

Thickness scales the volume linearly, so the arithmetic is easy and the numbers are bigger than people expect. A 12 × 20 ft driveway section:

Going from 4 to 6 in adds 1.5 cubic yards — a 50% increase in material for the same footprint. On a small pour that is a meaningful cost; on a driveway you intend to keep for thirty years it is usually the cheapest insurance available.

The base matters more than the last inch

A slab does not span like a beam. It sits on the ground and distributes load, so its performance depends heavily on what is underneath. Four inches of concrete on 4 in of well-compacted gravel will outlast six inches of concrete on soft, uncompacted fill, and no amount of extra thickness saves a slab that settles unevenly.

What that means in practice:

Reinforcement and control joints

Thickness, reinforcement and jointing work together. Welded wire mesh or fibre helps hold a crack tight once it forms; rebar on chairs adds real capacity in a thicker slab. Neither prevents cracking, which is why control joints are cut or tooled to about one quarter of the slab depth at regular spacing — a common rule of thumb is joint spacing in feet no more than two to three times the slab thickness in inches.

Where the rules come from

These are conventional figures, not code. Required thickness, reinforcement, base preparation and frost depth are set by your local building department and by soil conditions on your specific site. Anything structural — a slab that supports a wall, a footing, a garage that a vehicle enters — should be confirmed with the authority having jurisdiction, and engineered where they require it. Frequently asked questions

Is a 4 inch slab enough for a driveway?

For a light passenger car on a well-compacted base it often survives, but 5 to 6 inches is the normal specification for a residential driveway, and 6 inches if a delivery or moving truck will ever drive on it. The extra concrete costs far less than replacing a cracked driveway.

Does a thicker slab still need reinforcement?

Thickness and reinforcement do different jobs. Thickness spreads load; steel holds a crack tight after it forms. Most residential slabs use mesh or fibre plus properly spaced control joints, and thicker load-bearing slabs use rebar sized by an engineer.

How deep should the gravel base be under a slab?

Four inches of compacted crushed stone is typical for a residential slab, more over clay or poorly draining soil. Compaction matters as much as depth — loose gravel is no better than loose dirt.
