Typical for standard mixes at around 70 °F. Cold slows everything substantially; heat speeds the early set but can weaken the finished result.
Curing is not drying
The most useful thing to understand: concrete gains strength through hydration, a chemical reaction between cement and water. It does not harden by evaporation. If the surface dries out in the first days the reaction stops in that layer — which is why a slab left in sun and wind ends up with a dusty, weak surface that scuffs and spalls even though the core is sound.
So the job in week one is to keep water in:
- Mist and cover with plastic sheeting, or
- Lay wet burlap and keep it wet, or
- Spray a curing compound that seals the surface, or
- Pond water on a flat slab if the forms allow it.
Seven days of moist curing is the usual residential target. A day of proper curing in the first week is worth more than anything you can do to the slab later.
Weather changes the numbers

The mistakes behind most surface failures
- Adding water to make it easier to work. Water beyond the mix design is the fastest way to lose strength and invite shrinkage cracks. If it is too stiff, use a plasticiser, not a hose.
- Troweling while bleed water is still on the surface. Working that water back in creates a weak, dusty skin. Wait for it to disappear.
- No curing at all. Pouring on a hot breezy day and walking away costs a large share of the potential surface strength.
- Driving on it too early. A car at day 3 on a 4 in slab is a gamble; day 7 on a properly based slab is normal practice.
- Sealing too soon. Most sealers want a fully cured surface, typically 28 days — check the product.
