How Many Shingles Do I Need? Squares, Bundles and the Slope Factor

The four steps
- Footprint area. Length × width of the building, including the overhang if you want to be precise.
- Real roof area = footprint × slope factor. For 6/12 the factor is 1.118, so 1,200 sq ft of footprint is 1,342 sq ft of roof.
- Squares = roof area ÷ 100, after adding waste. 1,342 plus 10% is 1,476, which is 14.8 squares.
- Bundles = squares × 3 for standard three-tab and architectural shingles, rounded up. 14.8 × 3 = 45 bundles.
Skipping step 2 is the single most common ordering error on a re-roof. Off the 1,200 sq ft footprint you would have bought 36 bundles and come up more than a square short — nine bundles and a second delivery.

Waste allowance
- Simple gable, no penetrations: 10%. Cuts at the rakes and the ridge only.
- Hips and valleys: 15%. Every course meeting a hip or valley is cut on an angle, and the offcuts are rarely reusable.
- Complex roof, dormers, multiple planes: 15–20%.
- Architectural shingles on a cut-up roof: lean toward the higher figure — you cannot mix patterns from a different lot as easily as with three-tab.
What bundles do not cover
The bundle count is field shingle only. Budget these separately, and by the linear foot or the roll rather than by the square:

Order in whole bundles, and a little over
Shingles from a different production lot can differ subtly in colour, so a top-up delivery may not match the first — a real problem on a large plane in full sun. Buying two or three bundles more than the calculation is cheap insurance, and leftovers are genuinely useful for the storm repair that eventually comes.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three for most three-tab and architectural shingles, since each bundle covers about 33.3 square feet and a square is 100. Heavier designer and premium shingles can require four or five bundles per square — check the wrapper.
How do I convert my roof footprint to roof area?
Multiply the footprint area by the slope factor for your pitch. At 6/12 the factor is 1.118, so a 1,200 square foot footprint carries 1,342 square feet of roof. Ordering off the footprint is the classic way to run short.
How much waste should I add for shingles?
Ten percent on a simple gable, 15 percent on a roof with hips, valleys or dormers where courses are cut at an angle. Add a couple of extra bundles beyond that so a shortfall does not force a second order from a different production lot.
