How Many Shingles Do I Need? Squares, Bundles and the Slope Factor

Short answer: Multiply the footprint by the slope factor to get real roof area, divide by 100 for squares, and multiply by 3 for bundles. Add 10% waste on a simple gable, 15% with hips and valleys.

The four steps

  1. Footprint area. Length × width of the building, including the overhang if you want to be precise.
  2. Real roof area = footprint × slope factor. For 6/12 the factor is 1.118, so 1,200 sq ft of footprint is 1,342 sq ft of roof.
  3. Squares = roof area ÷ 100, after adding waste. 1,342 plus 10% is 1,476, which is 14.8 squares.
  4. Bundles = squares × 3 for standard three-tab and architectural shingles, rounded up. 14.8 × 3 = 45 bundles.

Skipping step 2 is the single most common ordering error on a re-roof. Off the 1,200 sq ft footprint you would have bought 36 bundles and come up more than a square short — nine bundles and a second delivery.

Order in whole bundles, and a little over

Shingles from a different production lot can differ subtly in colour, so a top-up delivery may not match the first — a real problem on a large plane in full sun. Buying two or three bundles more than the calculation is cheap insurance, and leftovers are genuinely useful for the storm repair that eventually comes.

Check the wrapper for coverage. Three bundles per square is the norm for three-tab and standard architectural shingles, but heavier designer, slate-look and premium products can run four or five bundles per square. The exposure and coverage printed on the wrapper override any rule of thumb.
