Snow
Steeper roofs shed snow, which reduces the accumulated load and the chance of ice dams. The practical range in snowy regions is roughly 6/12 to 12/12. Two cautions come with it:
- Shed snow lands somewhere. Plan where — not over a door, a walkway, a gas meter, or a neighbour's property. Snow guards exist for this reason.
- Steep is not a substitute for insulation and ventilation. Ice dams form because heat escaping into the roof deck melts snow that then refreezes at the cold eave. A steep roof helps; a well-insulated, well-ventilated, air-sealed ceiling is the actual fix.
Rain and wind
Any pitch of 4/12 or more sheds rain effectively. Below 4/12 wind-driven rain can push water back under shingle courses, which is exactly why doubled underlayment becomes a requirement in that range.
High wind pulls the other way. A steep roof presents more sail area and takes greater uplift at the ridge and edges, so hurricane-prone coastal design often favours lower, simpler roof shapes with strong edge attachment. Hip roofs also perform better than gables in high wind, because there is no large flat gable end for wind to press against.

So a 12/12 roof is not 41% more expensive than a 4/12 — it is more, because the labour rate rises along with the area, and the framing is taller.
What you get in return for steepness
- Attic volume, which can become storage or living space. A 12/12 roof over a 30 ft span gives 15 ft of ridge height above the plate.
- Longer material life, because water and snow spend less time on the surface.
- Architectural character. Pitch is one of the strongest style cues a house has — Cape Cod, Tudor and Victorian read steep; ranch and mid-century modern read shallow.
Matching an existing roof
For an addition, measure the existing pitch from the attic with a level and tape and match it unless there is a strong reason not to. A mismatched pitch on an addition is one of the most visible tells that a house has been added to, and the intersection detailing is more difficult.
