What Is a Good Roof Pitch?

Short answer: 4/12 to 8/12 covers most residential situations: steep enough to shed water and snow, shallow enough to walk and to build economically. Snow country favours the upper end, high-wind coastal areas the lower.

Snow

Steeper roofs shed snow, which reduces the accumulated load and the chance of ice dams. The practical range in snowy regions is roughly 6/12 to 12/12. Two cautions come with it:

Rain and wind

Any pitch of 4/12 or more sheds rain effectively. Below 4/12 wind-driven rain can push water back under shingle courses, which is exactly why doubled underlayment becomes a requirement in that range.

High wind pulls the other way. A steep roof presents more sail area and takes greater uplift at the ridge and edges, so hurricane-prone coastal design often favours lower, simpler roof shapes with strong edge attachment. Hip roofs also perform better than gables in high wind, because there is no large flat gable end for wind to press against.

Pitch drives cost through surface area, labour difficulty and framing:

So a 12/12 roof is not 41% more expensive than a 4/12 — it is more, because the labour rate rises along with the area, and the framing is taller.

Matching an existing roof

For an addition, measure the existing pitch from the attic with a level and tape and match it unless there is a strong reason not to. A mismatched pitch on an addition is one of the most visible tells that a house has been added to, and the intersection detailing is more difficult.

Structural design is not a rule of thumb. Snow load, wind exposure category, rafter or truss sizing and uplift connections are code matters specific to your location. Use pitch guidance to plan and to estimate material; have the structure designed by someone qualified for your jurisdiction.

Yes, on both counts that matter: it has more surface area for the same footprint — a 12/12 roof is 41 percent larger than its footprint against 5 percent for a 4/12 — and the labour rate rises because above about 7/12 the work needs roof jacks, harnesses or staging.

What is the minimum roof pitch for shingles?
