Square Feet, Square Yards and Square Meters: Converting Without Errors
Conversion table
| From | To | Multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| Square feet | Square yards | ÷ 9 |
| Square feet | Square meters | 0.09290304 |
| Square feet | Square inches | 144 |
| Square feet | Acres | ÷ 43,560 |
| Square yards | Square feet | 9 |
| Square meters | Square feet | 10.7639104 |
| Square meters | Square yards | 1.19599 |
The trap: area conversions square the length factor
A yard is 3 feet, so people reach for 3 when converting square yards. It is 9, because both dimensions scale:
1 sq yd = 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 sq ft
The same logic applies everywhere. A meter is 3.28084 ft, so a square meter is 3.28084² = 10.764 sq ft. A foot is 12 inches, so a square foot is 12² = 144 sq in. If you ever find yourself converting an area with a length factor, the answer is wrong by that factor again.

Where each unit shows up
- Square feet — the default for rooms, flooring, tile, paint and house sizes in the US.
- Square yards — carpet and broadloom, and some concrete and paving quotes. This is the unit that catches people out: a 240 sq ft room is 26.7 sq yd, and quoting the wrong one to a carpet supplier changes the price by a factor of nine.
- Square meters — imported flooring and tile, European product specifications, and most of the world's building documents.
- Acres — land. 43,560 sq ft, which is an odd number because an acre was originally one chain by one furlong.
Practical advice when a supplier uses a different unit
- Convert once, at the end. Measure and total everything in the unit you measured in, then convert the final figure. Converting each room separately multiplies rounding error.
- Say the unit out loud in the order. "Twenty-six point seven square yards" removes the ambiguity that costs money.
- Check coverage per box against your own unit. Imported tile boxes state coverage in square meters; a box marked 1.44 m² is 15.5 sq ft, and confusing the two makes a nine-box order look like a sixty-box order.
The square footage calculator prints square feet, square inches, square yards, square meters and acres for every area you enter, so no conversion is needed by hand.
Calculate the area of a room or any regular shape, add rooms into a running total, and convert the result into square yards, square meters and a material cost.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square yard?
Nine, because a square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet. Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards, and multiply by 9 to go the other way.
How do I convert square meters to square feet?
Multiply by 10.764. A 20 square meter room is about 215 square feet. Going the other way, multiply square feet by 0.0929.
Why is it 9 and not 3 for yards?
Because area has two dimensions and both of them convert. Three feet in each direction gives 3 times 3, which is 9 square feet in one square yard. Using the length factor on an area is the most common conversion mistake there is.
