Why butt joints decide this
Drywall has tapered long edges. Where two tapered edges meet, the taper forms a shallow valley that tape and compound fill flush with the wall surface — an invisible joint. The short ends have no taper, so a butt joint has to be built up above the plane of the wall and feathered out 10–12 in on each side. It is more work, and it is what shows under raking light.
So the goal is fewer butt joints, which means longer sheets:

Horizontal or vertical?
On 8 ft walls, hanging 4 x 8 sheets vertically gives no butt joints at all — each sheet runs floor to ceiling and every joint is a tapered edge. That is why vertical hanging is common in residential work with 8 ft ceilings, and why 4 x 9 sheets exist for 9 ft walls.
Hanging horizontally with long sheets is the professional choice on taller or longer walls: fewer joints overall, joints at a consistent height, and the sheet edges tie more studs together. It needs two people, and a lift or a deadman for ceilings.
Weight is the real constraint
A 4 x 12 sheet of 5/8 in Type X weighs over 100 lb and is 12 ft of floppy, brittle panel. Alone, in a stairwell, up a flight of stairs, it is genuinely dangerous — it breaks, and it breaks awkwardly. Buy the size that matches the crew you actually have, not the one that minimises joints in theory.
Practical selection
- Working alone, 8 ft ceilings: 4 x 8, hung vertically.
- Two people, long open walls: 4 x 12 horizontal.
- 9 ft ceilings: 4 x 9 vertical, if your supplier stocks it.
- Ceilings: the longest you can lift with a panel lift, run perpendicular to the joists.
- Stairwells and small closets: 4 x 8 or smaller, no argument.

Is 4x12 drywall better than 4x8?
It produces fewer butt joints, which are the hardest joints to finish invisibly, so the wall looks better with less skill. But a 4x12 half-inch sheet weighs over 80 pounds and needs two people, so 4x8 is the practical choice for solo work and tight spaces.
Should drywall be hung vertically or horizontally?
On 8 foot walls, hanging 4x8 sheets vertically eliminates butt joints entirely because every joint falls on a tapered edge. On longer or taller walls, horizontal hanging with long sheets gives fewer joints overall and is standard professional practice.
