Bulk or Bagged Mulch: Which Is Actually Cheaper?

Short answer: Bags win under about one cubic yard, bulk wins from around three yards up, and in between it depends on the delivery fee. One cubic yard equals 13.5 standard 2 cu ft bags.

The unit everything hinges on

Bulk mulch is priced per cubic yard; bagged mulch is priced per bag, normally 2 cu ft. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so:

1 cubic yard = 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft

That single conversion is what makes the comparison possible. If bags are $4.50 each, a yard's worth of bagged mulch is 13.5 × $4.50 = $60.75. Compare that with the delivered price per yard, including the delivery fee spread over however many yards you order.

Worked comparison

Volume neededBags at $4.50 Bulk at $35/yd + $75 deliveryWinner
1 cu yd14 bags = $63$110Bags
2 cu yd27 bags = $121.50$145Bags
3 cu yd41 bags = $184.50$180Bulk, just
5 cu yd68 bags = $306$250Bulk clearly
10 cu yd135 bags = $607.50$425Bulk, decisively

Prices are illustrative — use your own supplier's numbers in the calculator. The shape of the curve is what transfers: the delivery fee is fixed, so bulk gets cheaper per yard the more you order, while bags cost the same per yard forever.

What the price comparison leaves out

Quality is not the same either

Bagged mulch is a consistent, screened, usually dyed product with a predictable particle size. Bulk from a landscape yard varies more: it may be fresher, coarser, sometimes better value for the same volume, and occasionally contains material you did not want. Ask to see the pile, and ask what it is — "hardwood mulch" from one yard and the next are not necessarily the same thing.

A practical rule

The mulch calculator has fields for both prices — enter the per-bag and per-yard figures your suppliers quote and it will tell you which is cheaper for your exact volume.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch equal a cubic yard?

Thirteen and a half bags of the standard 2 cubic foot size, since a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. For 3 cubic foot bags it is 9, and for 1.5 cubic foot bags it is 18.

Will a cubic yard of mulch fit in a pickup truck?

Volume-wise yes, weight-wise usually also yes for mulch at roughly 600 to 800 pounds per yard dry. Wet mulch is significantly heavier, and topsoil at about 2,200 pounds per yard is close to or beyond the payload of a half-ton truck, so haul soil one yard at a time.

Is bulk mulch better quality than bagged?

Different rather than better. Bagged product is screened and consistent; bulk from a landscape yard is often fresher and coarser but varies between suppliers and batches. Look at the pile before you order.
